The 2017-2018 Family Engagement Webinar Series will serve as a venue for educational consultants from the Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN) and Local Educational Agency (LEA) administrators and staff to share effective practices and strategies to engage families in support of student success. This webinar series is designed for school administrators, teachers, and others interested in learning how Pennsylvania educators are engaging families in an effort to effect student learning.

Strengthening Partnerships Through Two-Way Communication

Effective two-way communication with families is essential for strong family-school partnerships. During this webinar, members of an LEA along with PaTTAN educational consultants shared practices and strategies they have found successful in sharing information, setting realistic goals for students, and ensuring families are well-informed, actively engaged partners in education.

Partners in Behavior: What Families Need to Know to Support Check In Check Out At Home

Check In Check Out (CICO) is a highly effective research based strategy used to provide students with additional academic or behavioral feedback and reinforcement. The strategy, typically applied in the school setting, can be successfully implemented in the home environment to extend learning and consistency. During this webinar, PaTTAN consultants and participating LEA members will discuss the components of the CICO strategy and explain how to support the use of this strategy at home.

Partners in Secondary Transition: What Families Need to Know

Family member support is integral to a youth transitioning from high school to adult life. Matters such as customized employment, entitlement vs eligibility, and exploring the option of a two or four year college, are just a few of the topics that may be explored during the transition process. During this webinar, PaTTAN consultants will introduce available resources such as the Family 1-Pager Guides and Planning for the Future Checklist to LEAs and discuss strategies for sharing them with parents and family members in supporting youth in preparing for post-secondary education, employment, and independent living.

Nothing About Me Without Me: Engaging Families Through Student Participation in Meetings and Events
March 22, 2018 (1:00 pm – 2:00 pm)
When students are responsible for sharing their progress, challenges and achievements with their families, conferences and meetings take on new meaning. During this webinar, members of an LEA along with PaTTAN educational consultants will share their experiences and the impact student-involved conferences and school activities have on family-school partnerships. Engaging families in supporting their students’ learning is bolstered when students are active in their education and planning for the future.

Partners in Behavior: What Families Need to Know As PBIS Core Team Members
May 3, 2018 (1:00 pm – 2:00 pm)
Behavioral challenges are not limited to the school setting. Therefore, engaging families as active members of the school team to review data and provide input regarding the implementation of positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS) enhances the LEA’s efforts in partnering with families. During this webinar, PaTTAN consultants will discuss considerations and strategies for collaborating with families as members of the PBIS core team and ways their collective perspectives and knowledge base can jointly best serve students and targeted PBIS interventions.
