When Lisa Brunschwyler died suddenly on December 12, 2016, we lost a dear friend and a valued colleague. For almost 20 years, Lisa was an Educational Consultant with the Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN), working primarily as an Interagency Coordinator. In this role, she supported countless students by assisting multiple child-serving systems to work collaboratively to focus on and understand a student’s needs in order to develop and implement a plan for education and support. Lisa was known for pushing systems to put students and families over policy, funding barriers, and rules. She was highly skilled at bringing people together, building partnerships, and helping students and families feel a sense of hope and empowerment. Lisa was also a member of PaTTAN’s procedural safeguards and behavior teams, providing training and technical assistance in the areas of Safety Care and Youth Mental Health First Aid, among many other topics.

Those of us who were fortunate enough to work with Lisa will remember her best for her sense of humor and her sense of community. During football season, she sang the Eagles’ fight song over the office intercom. Long before it became the norm, Lisa collected our office recycling in her cubicle and piled it in her car to take to her local recycling center. She instituted a dubious award called “Tool of the Week,” which was occasionally presented to a colleague who had done something outlandishly regrettable. She was our holiday party planner, our comic relief, and our constant caregiver. Lisa will be greatly missed.
