MTSS Boot Camp: What Do Teams Do?

by Dr. Jennifer Collins, Michael Minor

During the 2015-16 academic school year, PaTTAN has offered multiple MTSS Boot Camp training sessions in the eastern, western and central regions. Boot Camp “foci” include revisiting the conceptual underpinnings of MTSS and establishing coherence among the academic standards, MTSS, and PA’s Educator Effectiveness System. This is facilitated through discussion and analysis within the context of each of the components of PA’s MTSS model and within the larger context of sustainable practices and fidelity of implementation at the building, grade and student levels.

During Boot Camp, interdisciplinary teams also evaluate the current effectiveness of their models using “system level” indicators and then develop a plan for refining implementation toward their respective desired outcomes. Teams often leave “camp” with an expanded medicine cabinet that includes evidence-based methodologies that span literacy, math and behavior and technically adequate data sources. Finally, teams have the opportunity to explore PA’s RtII/SLD application to assess their current level of evidence of fidelity of implementation against best practices among exemplary MTSS models.

The traditional Boot Camp from previous years was broadened this year to represent specific content and materials K-12. PaTTAN offered elementary/middle school boot camp and high school boot camp. This trend will continue in the 2016-17 school year and teams may register for boot camps via the PaTTAN website (

After attending Boot Camp, educators and administrators have reported that they have a deeper understanding of data-based decision-making relative to instruction and intervention within and across the tiers. Many teams report a feeling of empowerment as it relates to moving forward, celebrating the practices they do have in place and “zeroing” in on one or two near future priorities.

MTSS Boot Camp is a necessary springboard for meeting with success in other PaTTAN sponsored series including our Tier 3 Problem Solving Series, the MTSS Mathematics Cohort Series, and/or the MTSS Writing Cohort Series. This training affords teams an opportunity to discuss where they have been and where they need to go while getting a sense of where other teams are in their respective MTSS journeys.
