Principals Understanding how to Lead Special Education (PULSE)

As a building administrator, are you looking to enhance your knowledge of:

  • The educational and legal requirements for students with disabilities?
  • What effective instructional practices in a standards aligned system look like for all students?
  • Creating and maintaining a safe and supportive environment for all students?

The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE)and the Bureau of Special Education (BSE) are pleased to announce professional development targeted specifically for principals and assistant principals in improving practices related to students with disabilities. The training series is called “Prinicipals Understanding how to Lead Special Education (PULSE).”

This multiple day experience is designed to prepare school leaders to exercise strategic and systematic leadership in inspiring, mentoring, and mobilizing faculty and staff to address the learning needs of students with disabilities. Participants will work to design and develop continuous professional learning systems for faculty with a focus on supporting all students, including inclusive practices for students with disabilities. During this training experience, school leaders will understand their need to have a clear vision for their schools that ensures teachers and students meet individual and school goals for improvement. Schools need principals who, as Instructional Leaders, strive for quality instruction in their schools and communicate that to all of their constituents.

The program will focus on three main topics – all with improved instructional and leadership practices at the core:

  • Creating a culture of change
  • Being an instructional leader
  • Ensuring safe and supportive schools
    Aside from on-site work, participants are required to complete work prior to the sessions (readings, interviews, surveys) and homework.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the necessary components to effect change
  • Analyze and share his or her vision and mission statements
  • Identify key principles of IDEA and Chapter 14 regulations
  • Understand his or her role as an LEA representative in an IEP meeting
  • Analyze and implement the use of assessment data to guide instruction in classrooms
  • Provide feedback on the implementation of research based strategies through activities such as: walk-throughs, formal and informal observations
  • Identify and nurture relationships to enhance organizational culture and core values
  • Identify alternatives to suspension and expulsion of students
  • Analyze data to identify patterns of behavior
  • Gain a deeper understanding of implementing guidelines for behavior and rules for discipline
  • Understand that a supportive school climate will increase student achievement
  • Understand that poor academic skills may be a root cause for misbehavior
